Riaz Samadhan is a Mumbai based visual artist. He hails from Kolhapur. He works within the genres of Realism and Abstraction. His visual practice culminates from the Kolhapur School, the legacy which Abalal Rahiman and M V Dhurandar imparted through JJ School of Art’s Bombay School tradition of European Naturalism. This Academic leaning has enabled him to explore various mediums with great tenacity within genres such as landscape, portraiture, conceptual figurative, still-life and abstract. Within his practice, he experiments in various mediums such as Oils, Watercolors, Graphite and Gauche.
As he talks about his perspective about live works, he explains “when it comes to live paintings. ‘Observation’ is direct, this very act transforms’ the doer into a mere ‘presence’. It breaks the moulds of memories, conditionings, concepts and assumptions and replaces it with a fresh perception. This perception transforms the quality of the object, and our relation with it, it imparts a psychological perspective to delve into.”
