Born in the fishing hamlet of Sunderbans, West Bengal, Priyaranjan Purkait’s artistic practice is deeply influenced by the techniques and methodologies deployed in the process of making and repairing fishing nets. He also draws inspiration from the Kantha stitching and weaving techniques, which involves reuse of old unused cloths, by stitching different cloths together to make newer versions of them, for various utilitarian household purposes. The geographic, cultural, social and economic aspects pertinent to the fishing community, receives a unique and abstract treatment in Purkait’s canvas. The artworks look like fabrics where no threads are used and the pigments, as a whole, act as material, which resembles the aesthetics of the fabric, while not being that. Born in South 24 Parganas Sundarban in 1984, Priyaranjan Purkait has completed graduation from Indian College of Art & Draftsmanship, Kolkata and post-graduation from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata.
