Gurdeep Brar, a Delhi-based artist from Bathinda, Punjab, completed his M.F.A. from Shiv Nadar IOE, Greater Noida, India, in 2023. His work engages with ephemeral materials to explore themes such as the mismanagement of resources, the relationship between humans and nature, shifting priorities, and the cycle of disintegration and return to the natural state once something reaches its peak. Initially a figurative painter, Gurdeep found greater expression through sculptural work. His art began with narratives drawn from the lived realities of people in his region, offering a deeper connection through these overlooked stories. This body of work seeks to answer what an artistic practice rooted in ephemeral materials and untold stories might look like, highlighting the artist’s empathy. The themes of death and loss play a central role in his practice, which includes sculptures, site-specific installations, paintings, and photographs. Gurdeep is particularly interested in understanding the sculptural qualities of his works and their evolution within contemporary practice. His work embraces the transient nature of existence, where materials and works bear the marks of time, showing signs of decay and change.
