Born in Ahmedabad in 1931, he was an eminent teacher who guided generations of students at the School of Architecture, CEPT University, Ahmedabad.
Piraji Sagara hailed from a family of traditional wood carvers, which influenced his early interest in art. He completed separate Master's degrees in Drawing and Arts from the J. J. School of Art, Mumbai.
Piraji Sagara's artistic style is distinguished by its use of vibrant colors and eclectic materials. He introduced wood collages and incorporated materials such as colored boards, tin plates, brass plates, and nails into his sculptures and paintings. His work often explored themes of human existence, nature, and the contradictions inherent in life. These themes were presented through a unique blend of abstraction and folk influences, reflecting his Rajasthani heritage.
During his illustrious career, he won recognitions from the Kolkata Fine Arts Academy, Gujarat State Lalit Kala Akademi and the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. His work was exhibited internationally at venues such as the São Paulo Biennale in Brazil, the Fukuoka Museum of Art, Tokyo and exhibitions across Europe in the early 70s.
