One of the most seminal practitioners of contemporary South Asian art, Madhvi Parekh ventured into Indian art in the late 1960s as a self-taught artist. Her lack of experience in fine arts training was never a hindrance to her unique artistic expressions, instead she was able to sensibly bridge the divide between the folk and the contemporary through her images. Similar to many feminist art practitioners of the period, Parekh too reclaimed folk and craft practices and foregrounded the techniques, visual styles and mediums through her practice that challenge the material domain of high art. Widely travelled and exhibited, Parekh also engaged in conversation and dialogue with her fellow female art practitioners to widen the scope of a feminist praxis. Parekh’s visual style of flat pictorial surface and use of decorative elements or motifs are also foundational in emphasising the importance of a post-colonial aesthetics. She draws a lot from the pluralistic heritage of South Asian religions, imageries, mythologies and also refuses to get trapped into one of these.
