Gopikrishna, born in Trivandrum in 1965, earned his BFA from the College of Art in Trivandrum and his MFA from the College of Art in New Delhi. His debut solo exhibition took place at the College of Fine Arts Gallery in Trivandrum in 1989.
His paintings resemble pages from a fairytale book, featuring animals that resemble humans and humans that resemble animals, all inhabiting a world bound together by their shared existence. On a single canvas, one can experience the blending of the ordinary and the impossible, unity and solitude, light (wisdom) and darkness (ignorance). In the material-driven world of man, such scenarios exist only in Gopikrishna’s imaginative wonderland.
Gopikrishna’s solo exhibitions include those at Art Musings, Mumbai (2007), Palette Art Gallery, New Delhi (2006), Kashi Art Gallery, Mattanchery (2004), Kashi Art Café, Cochin (2002, 2001), and Durbar Hall, Kerala (2000). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions across India, Amsterdam, New York, and Texas. He received the Kerala State Award for Drawing from the Lalit Kala Akademi in 2000 and the All India Fine Arts Society Award in New Delhi in 2002.
